Cutting One Forest Empties More Than One Habitat

Why does clearing one forest affect far more than the trees?

Because every organism there was connected to others. Remove the trees and the birds and insects lose shelter, the animals that ate them lose food, the soil loses the roots that held it, and less photosynthesis leaves more carbon dioxide in the air.

What are the major threats to life on the Earth?

Three, and they are connected rather than separate.

Climate change — a long-term shift in temperature and rainfall patterns, driven mainly by greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels. It brings hotter summers, erratic monsoons, melting glaciers and rising sea levels.

Biodiversity loss — the disappearance of kinds of plants and animals, mainly through destruction of their habitats. Once a kind of organism is gone it cannot be brought back, and every loss weakens the food webs it belonged to.

Pollution — harmful substances added to air, water or soil:

- Air pollution — smoke, dust, sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide from vehicles, factories and burning of fuel and crop residue. Causes breathing illness and acid rain.
- Water pollution — sewage, industrial waste, pesticides and fertiliser runoff, and plastic in rivers and seas. Kills aquatic life and spreads disease.
- Soil pollution — excess chemical fertiliser and pesticide, plastic and industrial waste, which reduce fertility and harm soil organisms.

A city crossroads on a winter morning shows several at once — exhaust fumes, road dust and smoke from burning rubbish.

The three reinforce one another, and that is the point of listing them together. Deforestation causes biodiversity loss and also worsens climate change, because fewer trees absorb less carbon dioxide — so a single cause feeds two threats, and tackling one often helps the other.

How does burning fossil fuels warm the planet?

By adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, which trap more of the Earth's heat.

Fossil fuels are coal, petroleum and natural gas, formed from the remains of organisms buried long underground. Burning them for electricity, transport and industry releases carbon dioxide.

The mechanism, step by step:

1. Greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour — let the Sun's rays in to warm the Earth's surface.
2. They trap part of the heat radiated back from the surface, instead of letting it escape to space.
3. This natural greenhouse effect keeps the Earth warm enough for life.
4. Burning fossil fuels and cutting forests raise the carbon dioxide level, so more heat is trapped.
5. Average temperatures rise. That is global warming.

Its consequences:

- Glaciers and polar ice melt, so sea levels rise and low-lying coastal areas and islands are flooded
- Rainfall patterns are disturbed, bringing erratic monsoons, droughts in some regions and floods in others
- More frequent and severe heatwaves, cyclones and storms
- Crop yields fall where it becomes too hot or too dry
- Habitats shift, so species that cannot move or adapt decline

The distinction that must stay sharp is between the greenhouse effect and global warming. The greenhouse effect is natural and necessary — without it the Earth would be far too cold for life. Global warming is its harmful intensification by extra greenhouse gases, so calling the greenhouse effect itself a problem loses the mark.

How does habitat destruction spread loss through a food chain?

By removing the base or a link, after which the effects travel along the chain in both directions.

Biodiversity means the variety of living things in an area. It falls when habitats are destroyed by deforestation, draining of wetlands, mining, building and farming expansion, and by pollution, overhunting and climate change.

Tracing it through a forest food chain — trees, then insects, then birds, then snakes, then hawks:

- Cutting the trees removes the producers and the shelter
- Insects lose food and nesting places, so their numbers fall
- Birds that ate those insects lose food and decline
- Snakes that ate the birds decline in turn
- Hawks at the top lose their prey and disappear from the area
- Decomposers have less leaf litter, so the soil loses humus and fertility
- With no roots binding it, the soil erodes and even grass struggles to return

And the effects run the other way too. Removing a predator lets its prey multiply — killing snakes allows rats to increase, and the rats then destroy far more stored grain.

Draining a wetland to build on it is the same story in miniature: the fish, frogs and water birds go, and so do the birds that fed on them.

The feature that makes this serious is that extinction is permanent. A population reduced can recover, but a kind of organism lost is gone for good, along with whatever role it played — which is why conservation protects whole habitats rather than trying to save single species one at a time.

Which actions actually help sustain life on the Earth?

Action is needed at three levels, and each does something the others cannot.

Individual actions:

- Reduce, reuse and recycle — carry a cloth bag, refuse single-use plastic, repair rather than replace
- Save electricity — switch off fans and lights, use LED lamps
- Save water — mend leaking taps, avoid running water while brushing
- Walk, cycle or use public transport instead of a private vehicle
- Segregate waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable, and compost kitchen waste
- Plant and care for trees, and avoid burning rubbish or crop residue

Community actions:

- Tree plantation drives and protection of local ponds, lakes and groves
- Rainwater harvesting and recharging of groundwater
- Proper waste collection, composting and recycling arrangements
- Sewage treatment before water is released into rivers
- Awareness campaigns, and creation of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks

Global actions:

- International agreements in which countries commit to limiting greenhouse gas emissions, because the atmosphere is shared and no country can fix it alone
- Shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy — solar, wind, hydroelectric and biogas — which produce electricity without releasing carbon dioxide
- Protecting forests and oceans across borders, and sharing technology

Justifying them is part of the answer. Renewable energy attacks the cause of global warming rather than its symptoms; reducing waste cuts both pollution and the energy used in making new things; planting trees absorbs carbon dioxide and restores habitat at once.

Why all three levels are needed is the reasoning to reproduce. Individual habits alone cannot reduce a country's power-station emissions, and international agreements alone achieve nothing if nobody changes what they do — so the levels support each other rather than substituting for one another.

Exam tip: keeping the greenhouse effect and global warming apart

This chapter has two pairs that are constantly confused, and both are easy marks once separated.

Say that the greenhouse effect is natural and necessary, while global warming is its harmful increase from extra greenhouse gases. Naming carbon dioxide and methane as the gases earns another mark.

Keep the causes of acid rain separate from the cause of warming: acid rain comes from sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, while warming comes from carbon dioxide.

For a food-chain question, trace at least three steps and include an effect on the soil or decomposers, which most answers leave out.

When suggesting actions, give the number asked for, sort them as individual, community and global, and justify each one briefly.

And make every measure specificcarry a cloth bag, fit LED lamps, harvest rainwater — rather than "save the environment".

Why can no single country fix global warming by itself?

Because the atmosphere does not stop at a border.

Carbon dioxide released anywhere mixes through the whole atmosphere within a year or two, so it warms the entire planet regardless of where it came from. A country that cuts its emissions sharply still feels the effect of everyone else's.

That is precisely why international agreements exist. They are not simply goodwill — they are the only arrangement that can work for a problem where the harm is shared by all and the cause is spread across every country at once.
